Facilities

As Cambridge has a collegiate system, you'll find that a lot of your time is spent in and around College. Each College has its own self contained community, and Selwyn is no exception. It provides a wide range of facilities for its students, ranging from a gym to a chapel.

In this section you can find further details of all these facilities.

College Bar

The College Bar is located in Old Court next to 'A' Staircase. It serves a wide variety of beers, ales, lagers, and spirits, as well as soft drinks. It also has a TV which has Sky. The bar hours very rarely change during the year and if they do then there is usually a poster or notice placed on the chalk board outside the porters' lodge. The usual hours are as follows:

Monday - Saturday 18.00 - 23.00
Sunday - 19.00 - 23.00

During the first two terms of the academic year there usually is a late night bar on Saturdays which means the bar is open till midnight. The bar closes, like the rest of the catering department, for two weeks at the end of August (Saturday 18th August to Sunday 2nd September in 2007). Also, there may be some days where the bar may be closed due to outside funtions such as weddings.

Chapel
Selwyn Chapel

The Chapel in Old Court is open most every day of the year from early to late. It can be used as a place for personal prayer or quiet reflection. Public worship is conducted regularly, with the major choral services on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and the College Eucharist on Sunday mornings. Services of morning and evening prayer and Eucharist are advertised on the notice board near the Porters’ Lodge. The College Choir sings at the Choral Services and twice a term at candlelit Compline.

During Full Term, the pattern of services runs as:

 Sunday     10am: Eucharist
     6pm: Choral Evensong
 Monday     8am: Morning Prayer
     5:30pm: Evening Prayer
 Tuesday     8am: Morning Prayer
     6:30pm: Choral Evensong
 Wednesday     8am: Morning Prayer
     12:30pm: Eucharist
     10pm: Compline
 Thursday     8am: Morning Prayer
     6:30pm: Choral Eucharist
 Friday     8am: Morning Prayer
     10pm: Informal service
 Saturday     No services

College Gym
Selwyn has a small gym equipped with rowing machines (ergs) and some free weights machines. It is located next to 23 West Road. The key is available at the Porters’ Lodge.

Computing

The MCR has two networked Macs, open to anyone to use, and which are suitable for accessing email and the internet.

All College rooms are wired for Ethernet, at a cost of around £30 per term. Instructions for using this service are here. Wireless connectivity (including eduroam) is available through most of the College.

The College has three Public Workstation (PWF) areas: in the JCR in Ann's Court, in Cripps Court between I and J staircases, and in the Library. Each room has printing facilities. The public computers are all dual-boot Windows/Linux, and there are one or two Macs, and all are linked to the University PWF. You will need your CRSid and password in order to use them. You should receive these either when when you arrive in College, or when you matriculate.

For more information on College IT facilities, including bandwidth charges and other important information, see the College website .

Laundry

LaundryThere are several laundry facilities in College. One can be reached through the Kitchen yard in Old Court, another is in Cripps Court J staircase, just opposite the MCR, and there are ones at 31 and 40 Grange Road. They are open between 6am and midnight and contain both washing machines and tumble driers. The machines are coin-operated and cost £1.50 for a standard wash (45 minutes) and 80p for a tumble dry (50 minutes).

The laundry rooms also contain irons and ironing boards.

Library

Selwyn LibraryThe College Library is entered just behind the car park to the right of the main entrance. It has a reasonable collection of the essential texts for most subjects. However, as a postgraduate, you will probably find that you will need to use the University Library or your Department's library instead, as these will have the more specialised texts and sources you need.

The University Library (UL) is one of the Legal Deposit libraries in the UK. This means that it should hold a copy of every work published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The UL is off West Road (very close to Selwyn, be it a blessing or a curse!). To activate your library card you need to take your admissions letter from the Board of Graduate Studies and your University Card to the front desk. You can only take clear plastic bags into the library; however, lockers are provided for a £1 deposit. The UL also runs free orientation sessions, which are very helpful. You can check out up to 10 books for a total of 8 weeks at a time and you must take them into the library to return them.

Meals
Selwyn Dining Hall © Selwyn CollegeCollege serves meals in hall, for which you need to take your university card. This is a great opportunity to meet others. You can cook for yourself, too, if you like. Whatever you choose, you will be charged a Kitchen Fixed Charge (KFC) for running of kitchens and a Minimum Meals Charge (MMC). The MMC is charged irrespective of whether you use it or not. You can use it by eating in Hall, buying supplies from Hall or attending Formal Halls and MCR dinners. KFC is reduced and MMC is optional if you do not live in College accomodation.

Hall is open at the following times:

Breakfast      Mon - Fri: 8am - 9am
     Sat: 8am - 8:45am
     Sun: 11:30am - 12:30pm (Brunch)
 Snacks     Mon - Fri: 8am - 1:30pm
 Lunch

     Mon - Fri:  12pm - 12:45pm (Hot Snacks)
     Mon - Sat: 12:45pm - 1:30pm

 Dinner     Mon - Fri: 6pm - 7pm
     Sat and Sun: 6pm - 6:45pm

Outside of Full Term (undergraduate terms - 8 weeks long), the times for Monday to Saturday are as for Saturdays in Full Term.

Every Tuesday and Thursday evening in Full Term, there is a Formal Hall. This is a waiter-service, three-course meal, where gowns are traditionally worn. Tickets need to be bought in advance from the MCR Secretary (mcr-secretary@sel).

Telephones
Every College room is wired with an NTL phone line ready to receive incoming calls. NTL has a hotline which informs you of your phone extension number. To place outgoing calls, you can obtain a phone card from the Porters’ Lodge. Mobiles tend to be cheaper for most calls, so beware!
