Gowns
Gowns must be worn by freshers for the matriculation photograph, and can be bought from the treasurer for £35 (subject to availability). The MCR will buy back the gown at the end of the year for £30. Gowns are also available to buy in town from Ryder and Amies from £50.

Local Facilities

On coming to a new place, it's hard to know where everything is. We've compiled a list of useful places for you; where you should go for everything from banks to dentists, food to films.

The University has an online map of Cambridge , with various locations marked. Selwyn is to the bottom-left of the map.

Formal Halls

Formal Halls take place on each Tuesday and Thursday of full term and cost £9.50 for members of College and guests. Members may bring 2 guests per meal.

The MCR is allocated 15 tickets at each formal hall (15 on Tuesday and 15 on Thursday). These tickets are booked through the events system. Booking opens at midday two weeks before the dinner and closes on Sunday at MIDNIGHT the week before the dinner (that is, 10 days before the Tuesday dinner and 12 days before the Thursday dinner). This deadline is final and tickets cannot be booked through the MCR after this.

You can book up to 3 tickets through the events system and specify any special dietary requirements. The cost of these tickets will appear on your next college bill but will not count towards your minimum meals charge. If you prefer, you can buy tickets through hall using your uni card, which will count towards your minimum meals charge.

If you miss out on booking tickets through the MCR you can still buy them through hall as per normal. The tickets are available exactly one week before the dinner and for one day only (that is, if you want to book for NEXT Tuesday, you buy the tickets THIS Tuesday). You can get tickets at the following times:

Breakfast: 8am - 9am (25 tickets only on sale)

Lunch: 12pm - 1.30pm (25 extra tickets on sale)

Dinner: 6pm - 7pm (remainder of tickets on sale)

Once these deadlines have passed there is no other way to reserve tickets through the college or the MCR. If you are still looking for tickets after these dates you can look on the blackboard outside the Porters' Lodge to see if someone is selling them or on the Selwyn MCR Facebook page. Please do not contact the Secretary or catering as there is nothing we can do after the deadlines have passed.

Please remember that you and your guests need to wear formal attire to formal halls and that you will need to wear your gown (guests do not need to have a gown unless they are Selwyn students). Please also refrain from "pennying" food or wine as the coins get left behind in the dishes and glasses and then damage the dishwasher.

Please also remember that you are responsible for your guests.

Dinner begins at 7.30pm sharp. The bar is open before the dinner for wine sales. You can bring your own wine to the dinner but you must present it to the bar before the dinner to be stamped and to pay a corkage fee. There is no reserved seating so if you would like to sit with your friends it is suggested that you arrive early to line up outside hall.

If you have any further questions about booking formal hall tickets please contact the MCR Secretary (Rob Jones).

In the case that you cannot use the above hyperlinks, the Secretary's email is: mcr-secretary AT sel.cam.ac.uk.

Punting Schemes

Punting is a Cambridge tradition and you should give it a go while you're here. The correct way to punt is to stand on the flat part of the punt (the back), holding the pole. Let the pole slide through your hands into the water until it touches the bottom, then push hard, and then pull the pole out of the river bed (it may be necessary to twist the pole slightly if it sticks in the mud). Repeat.

Steering is accomplished by sweeping the pole through the water as you bring it up, using it as a rudder. If the pole gets completely stuck, LET GO! It is far better to leave the pole behind, where you can use the oar to paddle back and retrieve it, than it is to be left on a pole in the middle of the river, causing amusement to passing students and tourists as you slowly fall into the water.

More information on how to take advantage of one of the MCR's punt schemes follows.

MCR Garden
MCR GardenAt the back of 31 Grange Road, there is a large garden for the use of members of the MCR. Access is via the side gate. It can be used for MCR activities but not barbeques (which are not permitted in any college garden).

Bike Safety/ borrow a bike scheme!
Bikes are clearly the transport of choice for Cambridge folks, but a bike is not the only necessary piece of equipment, particularly after dark. The police are now issuing £40 on the spot fines to any individual cycling after dark without lights, so having some on your bike is a good investment as well as important for safety.

For further details of reimbursment for bike safety equipment, see below.

MCR bicycle

The MCR now has its own bike, courtesey of a generous fellow who donated it! It is a medium sized mountain bike, complete with helmet and lights and can be borrowed from the MCR if your bike breaks, or you have a guest in Cambridge etc.

The key is currently in the hands of the treasurer, and borrowing it for upto one week maximum is subject to a £10 deposit, which is returned when the bike and accessories are safely returned. Email the treasurer to arrange to take the bike out.

MCR Library
The books on the shelves in the MCR are all freely available for anyone to borrow for any length of time. It would be appreciated, however, if you would return books when you have finished so that other people can use them, particularly any travel guides. Any donations of books you have finished with are also welcome. The books are ordered by author in the various sections, except the Travel section, which is arranged by country. You can find a list of what books are available in the Documents section.

MCR CD/DVD collection

The CDs/DVDs in this collection are usually free ones from various newspapers. The box is on the shelves in the MCR.

Please feel free to borrow them for any length of time. The discs are in sections, in alphabetical order. It would therefore help if you were to put the discs back in the correct place when you return them. Please feel free to add to the collection from any new discs that come with the daily papers. There is a list of all the CDs/DVDs available in the Documents section of this site.
