College Rooms

All postgraduates are entitled to three years of accommodation in College rooms. There is a wide range of rooms available. Here you will find details of the various types of room, from the small and cosy to the palatial. First years are allocated a room more-or-less at random by College. Those staying for more than one year can then ballot for the room they wish in subsequent years.

All the rooms have a rent code which is determined by the size and furnishings of the room, as well as which floor it is on, and the house in which it is located. You will be charged for 48 weeks per year. Room rent is payable quarterly, and includes heating and electricity.

A review of some of the rooms in College is available to give you some idea of the range of available types of room. Click on the hostel name to see a list of rooms in that hostel.

This section is reliant on people submitting reviews of their own rooms, or rooms they have lived in at some time. Descriptions of the hostels would be nice as well. Please send your room reviews to mcr-computing@sel, and I'll try to put them up as soon as possible.

  • Cripps Court

Cripps Court was built in the late 1960's. It emanates 60's charm from every nook and cranny. Although the colour of the furnishings is predominantly brown, this can be rectified with a few well-placed cushions or posters. The rooms are a good size, and some have a view over the University rugby/football ground.

Some of the rooms are bed-sits, and some are sets (i.e. separate bedroom). Cripps rooms are virtually all rent code E or F.

  • 21 West Road

One of the nicest hostels in College, 21 West Road backs onto the newly constructed Ann's Court, and fronts onto West Road. It is just next door to West Road Concert Hall. The kitchen is large and light. It has a decent oven, and plenty of cupboard space. There's also a table which can sit about six people.

There are two showers (upstairs) and a bathroom, as well as three toilets. There are only eight student rooms in the house, as one is occupied by a Music fellow, and Room 4 doesn't exist. All the rooms have their own sinks.

  • 29 Grange Road
One of the larger graduate houses located just a minute's walk down the road from the main college, 29 Grange houses 11 graduate students and also has one guest room. Whilst rooms vary in size, most are fairly spacious and the house contains some of the largest rooms in the graduate ballot. All rooms have their own sink. The house has 3 showers, 2 baths and 4 toilets, a small communal living/dining area and a well-equipped but smallish kitchen. There is a laundry facility at the rear of the house. There is a small garden (area of grass) at the front and one side of the house and a sheltered bike shed.
  • 21 Grange Road
21 Grange Road has eight rooms. It has a decent sized kitchen, and also a separate area attached to the kitchen which no one can quite work out what it is. Most of the rooms are quite large, but there are some smaller ones. There's a small garden at the back as well. The single shower for this large house can become busy, although there is a bath on the first floor. If you’re keen on inviting people over to eat, the large and spacious kitchen on the ground floor is ideal.
